Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is fMRI?
A:
Magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive, usually painless medical
test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. MR
imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer
to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and
virtually all other internal body structures. The images can then be
examined on a computer monitor or printed. MRI does not use ionizing
radiation (x-rays). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is
a relatively new procedure that uses MR imaging to measure the tiny
metabolic changes that take place in an active part of the brain.
Q: I have had pain for years but have
not seen a physician; can I participate?
A: No. To be eligible for the study you must have had a chronic pain
diagnosis, that is verifiable in writing by your physician, for at least six months. You will be
required to provide verification of this diagnosis to participate.
Q: Is there compensation for
participation?
A: Yes, we compensate for $10h for travel to and from + tolls or
fare, $10h for time spent filling in forms and
$25h for time spent in the scanner.
Q: I do not live in the San Francisco
Bay area but would like to participate in this study. Is that
possible?
A: No. The travel
portion of compensation only applies to travel within the San
Francisco Bay area, up to 5 hours per any visit depending on traffic. If you are interested in participating, please
