Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is fMRI?
A:
Magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive, usually painless medical
test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. MR
imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer
to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and
virtually all other internal body structures. The images can then be
examined on a computer monitor or printed. MRI does not use ionizing
radiation (x-rays). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is
a relatively new procedure that uses MR imaging to measure the tiny
metabolic changes that take place in an active part of the brain.
Q: I have had pain for years but have
not seen a physician; can I participate?
A: No. To be eligible for the study you must have had a chronic pain
diagnosis by a physician for at least six months. You will be
required to provide verification of this diagnosis to participate.
Q: Is there compensation for
participation?
A: Yes, we compensate for travel, time spent filling in forms and
time spent in the scanner.
Q: I do not live in the San Francisco
Bay area but would like to participate in this study. Is that
possible?
A: This may be possible, but is not encouraged. This is a study
exploring the efficacy of real-time fMRI cognitive training as a
pain management treatment. We can not and do not imply that
participation in this study work for you. Additionally, the travel
portion of compensation only applies to travel within the San
Francisco Bay area. If you are interested in participating, please
